The Sphere

Volume LIX, No. 777 of "The Sphere" illustrated magazine. Page 265 entitled "Fighting in the Windmill Country of North France and Belgium" shows several windmills that have either been destroyed or used by soldiers.
Pp. 268-9 depicts the Cameron Highlanders capturing a German force near Langemarck, with a smock mill in the background.

"By nature I'm an artist"

Cutting from "The Daily Telegraph and Morning Post" dated December 6 1939. The cartoon of the windmill came from the "Boston Transcript". The cutting came from the Rex Wailes Collection.

"Pres du Moulin"

Postcard dated 31 May 1918. "Pres du gai moulin, en ce coin mysterieux, vivons toujours caches pour vivre heureux" [Near the gay mill, in this mysterious corner, let's live always hidden to live happy]. This postcard is used in "Mills at war", 2019, p.46.

"Campagne de Hollande 1795"

The painting depicted is by Georges Scott a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais.

The postmark cannot be read, but the date cannot be before 1910 as the painting depicted was created in 1910 nor after 1939 when the stamp used ceased circulation.
