Posters - The Amy Nicholls Mill Competition

1 x 43 cm by 27.5 cm and 1 x 32.5 cm by 25.5 cm poster aimed at community and educational groups encouraging entries into a competition to research and record information about the remaining mill sites on Barbados. Sponsored by the Chiltern Partnership, the Barbados National Trust and the Barbados Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture.

"A proposal for mill wall recording"

A 6-page proposal document for "A School Project to record all the Mill Walls on Barbados in conjunction with The Barbados National Trust and The Chiltern Partnership UK". The project was proposed by Nicholls in memory of his late-mother, Amy V. Nicholls. The document sets out links between pupils' project participation and relevant sections of the national curriculum, suggesting research methods which include the gathering of oral history and photographs as well as compiling statistical information on the sites. Safety criteria, funding, prizes, sponsorship, adjudication and timescales are discussed, the report concluding with an overview of project benefits and a recommendation for the permanent public display of the project results.

"Approach and Detail Document"

23-page document prepared by The Chiltern Partnership and The Barbados National Trust for The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs & Culture, Government of Barbados. The document comprises the application pack sent out to schools for the mill wall recording project including:
(1) an application form
(2) guidance notes on the procedures required to complete a recording project (including seeking permission from land owners and safety precautions)
(3) a list of primary/location information required
(4) 18 pages of detailed instruction on statistical details to be gathered at the mill site and machinery.

"Windmills in Barbados 1859" - copy

A photocopy of "Windmill in Barbados 1859. Based on a 1721 map by Wm. Mayo, revised in 1859 by Taylor". Fours sides of A4 listing windmills in each parish of Barbados. The list is annotated to show which mils have been allocated to schools participating in the mill wall project and those which the schools have requested in their application.

Project in progress - photographs

6 images of the restoration project in progress (c.1994), 4 of which printed onto standard A4 paper and 2 printed onto A4 photographic paper. The final image (again, printed onto standard A4 paper) is of the aftermath of a storm in 2008, after which the sails were taken down and restored in 2009.

A faxed copy of the agenda for WMF's grants review meeting for its watch-list of "100 Most Endangered Sites" for 1996. The press release shows Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill as one of the grant recipients, the grant being funded by WMF founding sponsor, American Express.

Remarks at Morgan Lewis Mill Celebration event

"Remarks by David Nicholls at the Morgan Lewis Mill Celebration, December 3rd 1997" rehearsing the history of the sugar mill and its restoration programme.
The speech/transcript acknowledges the donation of the mill by Lawrence Bannister to the Barbados National Trust in 1963 and the work of Teddy Holman Clark, Eustace Corbin and Colin Webster to repair/maintain the mill up until the point at which is could be fully restored. The speech also touches on efforts to recruit and involve local craftsmen and delays to the project caused by difficulties in sourcing appropriate timber from Guyana.

The sugar cane (A) is cut down and carried to the horse-driven mill (B) where it is crushed between vertical rollers. The extracted juice from the crushed canes flows down the chute to the boilers (C). From "A new and complete dictionary of arts and sciences", 1763 .
Based on drawing in "Histoire generale des Antilles habitées par les François" by Jean Baptiste Du Tertre, published in four volumes, 1667-1671.
