Cutting from the 'Stafford Newsletter' about the objections by a Mr Kenneth Chaplain to the Royal Naval Association's plan to fit sails onto the windmill at Broad Eye in Stafford, since his family had always driven it by steam.
The derelict Steam Mill at Upminster during demolition
The single fire tube boiler shell and the absence of additional smoke tubes identifies it as a brick-set Cornish style boiler. The brick-set under flues can be seen to each side. The end of the boiler as seen here protruded into a coal house for ease of stoking.

Steam mill grinding house at Upminster
Clearly seen are the gears and mechanisms of the drive train, the millstones, sack hoist, and one of two grain bins. This picture is thought to have been taken by Rex Wailes.
Boulton and Watt engine in the steam mill at Upminster
The engine in the steam mill at Upminster was manufactured by Matthew Boulton and James Watt at their Soho works in Birmingham. It was a modified Bell Crank engine rated at 6 hp and had a 10ft diameter flywheel. It drove two pairs of millstones and the drive shaft was extended into the windmill to run auxiliary machinery. This picture is thought to have been taken by Rex Wailes.
