"Windmill Saved"

Cutting from "The Star". The historic windmill at Upminster which has been a landmark for centuries has been sold but it will not be pulled down.

Cutting from "Essex Chronicle" reporting that Essex County Council had sought to make an order for the non-demolition of Upminster windmill. Mr Simons, the owner, objected to this action which was considered by the Ministry of Health inquiry. Mr Simons withdrew his objection after assurances form the Society fo the Preservation of Ancient Buildings would arrange preservation of the mill and mechanism.

From the County surveyor's report it seems the County Council is taking this matter seriously. The report mentions several windmills that are in a serious state of deterioration.

Cutting from "Christian Herald". London's last remaining windmill is for sale. It was built in 1799 and been in the "hands of the same family for several generations".

Cutting from "Evening Standard". A book about Essex Windmills written by Donald Smith - a Dagenham headmaster - was used by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings for its purposes. This research was used to inform the Essex County Council on their decision to fund restoration work on ancient windmills.

Cutting from "East Anglian Daily Times". A report by the County Surveyor regarding Essex windmills recommended that the Smock Mill at Upminster should not be demolished. This was approved by the County Council.

Cutting from "The Times" reporting that "Essex County Council has decided to take steps to save windmills in Essex from possible demolition". This was precipitated by a letter received from the Society of the Protection of Ancient Buildings expressing "concern at the rapid disappearance of windmills in Essex".
