Note on reverse reads "1873-1973. Oct 1949: After taking out the vanes - Mary said this was the beginning of the end! - The Last Rites!! They all went that way!!! Grandfather Alfred Aldred bought the mill Feb 1873. He used it until he died + was succeeded by his son A S Aldred (Steve Aldred) who used it until he died June 1947. I bought it Sept 1949 + eventually signed deed of guardianship with M of Works in 1951 [illegible signature]"

"English windmills get new lease of life"

Note in the 'Irish Independent' reporting Mrs Dance's point that, since they consume no fuel, English windmills are finding a new lease of life. The S.P.A.B. has even provided funds to fit a new set of sails and a stock to the Saxtead Green Mill in Suffolk.
