Mangerton Mill, Melplash, Netherbury, West Dorset

Netherbury is a village and civil parish in the English county of Dorset. The Illustrated Bridport Magazine of July 1857 featured an article on Netherbury. It called it ‘a delightfully situated village, commanding from nearly every part some pleasing views….The village itself is picturesque, with its high hedges of box growing luxuriantly…. The cottages are clean, and in front of many of them are neatly kept gardens.’

Set in a peaceful rural valley on the River Manger just outside of Bridport is Mangerton Mill, a 17th century working water mill and home to the Museum of Rural Bygones.

A 3-storey watermill, part 17th century. Was a grist mill and flax mill, last worked commercially in 1966. Now a workable grist mill with all its machinery including a restored overshot waterwheel. Cafe serving teas & light refreshments. Now the turbine-powered roller mill can be seen in operation.

Primarily used to grind barley in its day Mangerton Mill was powered by a wheel measuring 12 feet in diameter and 4 feet wide. Made from cast iron and solid oak the wheel is still one of the mills main features. Originally made from local sandstone, Mangerton has seen numerous renovations with the most recent in 1986 when restoration began to bring it into full working order. There is a scenic walk that takes you alongside the river where trout fishing is also available.
