Research notebook for Norfolk, 1927

A repurposed Army field message book labelled, "Norfolk 1927" containing notes taken from a four-day tour of over 30 Norfolk windmills. The notes contained within the bound section of the notebook are brief (only 26 pages in all, the remainder of the bound notebook being blank). However, a self-addressed envelope at the rear of the notebook contains 19 pages of Wailes' narrative account of each day of the tour, written up from his lodgings each night and including notes of his encounters with two millwrights, Robert Martin and Dan England, as well as various millers and mill owners. Also at the rear of the notebook are three single sheets of notes including an account of the raising of the windshaft at Billingford Common Mill, near Diss. Identifiable mills visited which feature in Wailes' narrative are listed in "Place access points" below.

Research notebook on woad cultivation and milling

A repurposed Army field message book labelled, "Woad" begins with 8 pages of notes on Willaston Mill taken on a visit on 26 October 1929. The remainder of the notebook is filled with detailed notes on woad cultivation and milling. Parson Drove Mill and Algarkirk Woad Mill both feature regularly in the notes. Visits to consult Spalding Gentlemen's Society's windmill folio and Boston Museum's woad exhibit are recorded/planned and notes are taken from a variety of books and journals including; J.B. Henry's 'The Woad Plant and its Dye' (Oxford University Press, 1930); the Agricultural Society's Journal (1917), 'Nature' Vol. 55 (1896 - 1897), 'Aunt Judy's Magazine' (1883); the Transactions of the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists' Society; the Horticultural Society Journal Vol. 26 (1906); J. M. Bayer's 'Theatrum Machinarium Molarium'; A. Young's 'General View of the Agriculture of the County of Lincoln' (1799).

Pocket notebook - 1931 or later

A repurposed pocket diary for November 1931 measuring 6.5 cm x 9 cm and marked "Hunts, Cambs, Suffolk" with brief notes on, and/or references to, the mills listed at "Place access points" below. The notes also mention an unidentified, 17th century smock mill at 'Ickleton, Suffolk' which had a thatched roof and had been pulled down at the end of the 19th century.

A repurposed, leather-covered diary for 1947 measuring approx. 7.5 cm x 14 cm and containing brief notes on a variety of milling matters (as well as other topics). More detailed notes and repair estimates are made on the mills listed at 'Place access points' below.
