Mortgage of a windmill and a watermill at Bridlington

One velum sheet (approximately 69 cm x 88 cm), signed and sealed by all four parties. The document records the grant of a mortgage by Thomas Bradley, miller, to Thomas Robinson, gentleman, as trustee for Rebecca Bradley, spinster and Thomas Smith, yeoman, relating to a "wind corn mill" at Bridlington and a "water corn mill" at Hilderthorp, both properties being "near the high road leading from Bridlington Quay to Bessingby on or towards the south".

Lease of Purwell Mill, Hitchin

6 page paper indenture (approx 38 x 24 cm); lease of Purwell Mill, Hitchin, Hertfordshire for 7 years, rent £110 per year. Six indentures relating to the Grist family concerning Lewiston Mill, Gussage Mill and other properties at Brimscombe, Thrupp

An indenture on three vellum sheets dated 8 April 1872 and measuring approx. 68cm x 56cm bearing the signatures and seals of all the parties to a transfer of mortgage relating to lands at Brimscombe, Gloucestershire; a conveyance between various members of the Grist family made on 12 July 1903 and on 6 pages of double-sided vellum measuring approx. 44 cm x 28 cm and signed and sealed by all the parties, together with a very clear plan measuring 50 cm x 44 cm showing the following mills: Gussage Mill (woollen), Lewiston Mill (woollen), Bourne Saw Mill, a Mill Pond, Dark Saw Mill and Bourne Mill (woollen). Then four indentures, all being on paper, measuring 39 cm x 35 cm, namely: a collateral security indenture dated 19 October 1906 and a transfer dated 28 August 1908; a reconveyance of a mortgage of Lewiston and Gussage Mills; a reconveyance of collateral security for the mortgage debt (both dated 14 July 1919); a lease from Richard Grist Ltd to Walter J Barnes of Lewiston Villa for 5 years from 29 September 1923. Lastly, one sheet of A4 (unknown author and date) giving the history of the Grist family from 1856 and their award-winning production of mattress wool and "flock and shoddy".

Indenture relating to a watermill at Darley, Dacre and Bewerley

1 sheet of vellum measuring 81cm x 63cm, sealed with "the mark of Henry Clint" of Darley, in which he grants a "feoffment of a watercorn-mill, land and premises in Darley and Dacre with Bewerley" to William, Nathan and Amos Bake of Dacre in consideration for the payment of £1425. The mill is known as "Darley Mill" and the feoffment references Darley Beck.

A year's lease for a watermill at Mill Bridge, Liversedge

1 sheet of vellum measuring 62cm x 39cm comprising a lease from Thomas Greenwood and Benjamin Wood of a corn mill at Mill Bridge, Liversedge to Elizabeth Kershaw. The description of the demised property includes, "All that Mill or building situate and being at Mill Bridge aforesaid used as a Corn mill with the water wheel, steam engine, engine house, drying kiln, machines, hoppers, Mill stones and all other implements, fixtures, geerings and things belonging to the said mill...". The indenture is signed and sealed by Wood and Greenwood.

Two 18th century documents relating to mills at Haughton and Thoresby Park, and to tree planting in the parkland of the Duke of Kingston (the Pierrepont Family)

1 folded sheet measuring 38cm x 31cm recording an agreement between the agent of the Duchess of Kingston and Thomas Thorpe (miller) relating to the diversion of the water supply to Haughton Mill and a weekly lease of new corn mill at Thoresby Park, the Duchess' corn and malt to be ground free of charge. A second folded sheet measuring 41cm x 31cm gives, "An Account of all the Trees taken out of the Nurserys and Planted in the Parke to 31 December 1762", seeming to relate to tree planting at either Thoresby Park or Holme Pierrepont Hall.

Three documents relating to Shillington Mill, Bedfordshire

Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 40cm x 32cm) documenting an inventory taken at Shillington Mill on 10 October 1862 by Isaac [Chalkley], millwright (Hitchin) with detailed description of machinery, stones and of a water wheel, "in very bad state of repair".
Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 48cm x 37cm) documenting the assignment of the lease of "the Water Corn Mill called Wattle Mills" by William Hipgrave (miller) to John Kempson (famer) and James Kempson (miller) dated 4 November 1865. Signed and sealed by all parties.
Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 40cm x 31cm) granting licence to the above assignment.

Specifications and contract for Bedcote Mill, Stourbridge

9 page handwritten specification and contract for Henry Hicklin (builder) to erect a new building and seating for a steam boiler for Ick and Palfrey, Sheepskin Rug Manufacturers at Mill Lane, Stourbridge dated, respectively, 17 May and 19 June 1878. (Measuring approx. 20cm x 32cm.)

Conveyance of a mill and premises in Rugeley, Staffordshire

Two sheets of vellum measuring approx. 69 x 57 cm comprising a conveyance of a water corn mill (formerly a leather mill) and associated buildings and pools near Turkeyshall Lane, Rugeley, Stafford. The parties to the conveyance include James Brittain (his wax seal attached), William Bamford, The Right Hon John C Tallboy, MP, (commonly called Viscount Ingestre), Sir George Sinclair MP, Thomas Pitt and Jeremiah Barrett.

Conveyance of a water corn mill, Westmorland

One sheet of velum measuring approx. 40 x 29 cm and bearing its original seal. On the reverse, "16 June 1612, Richard Langrigge & Wm Birkhead, Conveyance of Moietie of Water Corn Mill". The conveyance concerns land "in the said Countie of Westmorland & Commonlie called or known by the name of Mylnton, Mylne".

Two indentures relating to the sale of land in Pennsylvania, USA and additional documents

The first indenture comprises one sheet of paper, torn in two, measuring together approx. 45 x 29 cm which concerns the sale of land in Springfield PA (dated 1 November 1815); a second indenture, comprising four sheets of paper measuring 21 x 35 cm and bound together with a cover sheet printed "with Brown, Clark & Howe, Williamsport, PA" and relating to "a Jack Mill which [the parties] contemplate running and using" (dated 2 January 1860); a ledger (1889-1890) and various receipts and invoices relating to the business of Brown, Clark & Howe and various other Williamsport and Jersey Shore, PA businesses (1905-1906); an undated, hand-drawn map (approx. 36 x 19 cm) showing the division of plots of land in Driftwood, PA; a paper Warranty Deed (21 x 35 cm) certifying a married woman's capacity to contract (11 April 1906), McClennan County, Texas.
