Crown Wheel and pinion

The Crown Wheel and pinion mounted on the upright shaft is the main power take-off for driving auxiliary machinery and the sack hoist - the sack hoist belt can be seen. A mechanism allows the pinion to be lifted to disengage the gears and stop all machinery.

Brake Wheel

The Brake Wheel is 10 ft 9in diameter and has 78 wooden teeth. It meshes with a Wallower gear that has 43 teeth, thus the gear ratio is 1.8:1. By using gears that are a mix of an odd and even number of teeth, cyclic wear of the teeth is prevented.

Stone Nut

This image shows one of the four wooden toothed Stone Nuts, with its lifting ring to take it out of mesh with the Great Spur Wheel. Also seen is the adjustable bearing for the Stone Spindle that allows the spindle to be aligned.
