Photographs of UK windmills and watermills on postcards.
Research notes on mills, both originals and photocopies produced by the Science Museum.

Simmons, Herbert Edward Sydney (1901-1973)

Two mills side by side

HESS catalogue #2156. "The new mill and the old mill stand side by side. The wheel belonging to the latter is now removed and the mills are turbine driven."

Simmons, Herbert Edward Sydney (1901-1973)

Exterior from yard

HESS catalogue #2157. "Known locally as Ellis's Mill, it is of comparatively modern construction and the machinery is driven by turbine." This is obviously the "New Mill" but whether it is "Upper" or "Lower" I can't say - TKG.

Simmons, Herbert Edward Sydney (1901-1973)

Water- and wind-mills together

HESS catalogue #2197. "Built 1820 and originally a paper mill, it was converted for corn grinding with three pairs of stones and eventually an additional three pairs by wind. The breast wheel is now removed."

Simmons, Herbert Edward Sydney (1901-1973)

Exterior view from south

HESS catalogue #2205. [Incorrectly identified as Belsteads Mill in Short's notebook, and by FWG in his album. Correctly identified by Guy Boocock as Croxton's Mill, Little Waltham using modern photographs and Hervey Benham's Some Essex Water Mills" p37.]
