Wire Machine and Dust Extractor

At Upminster the Wire Machine is used only for cleaning (polishing) the grain before milling. Mounted above the machine is a vacuum dust extracting system that, although more than a century old in design, works on the same principle as modern bagless domestic vacuum cleaners.

Mr Tom Dix, found out that the present council was thinking of moving the model of Upminster Windmill - which he 'd accepted during his term of duty - from Romford's Central Library to the Upminster Branch Library.

Windmill's bicentenary

The windmill is open to the public many weekends throughout the spring and summer, and for schools visits. After restoration it will be opened more frequently. There are also a number of special events held each year such as craft fairs, pageants, classic car shows and similar.

The article gives a brief history of the mill, and declares that the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings is associated with restoring the mill. It also mentions the purchase of the smock mill in Upminster under a similar order.
