A Reporters Notebook labelled 'Bath Nov 1967, Group 9 Reading Feb 1968, Kent & Staffs 1968', the contents being itemised on the front and back covers.
The 'Bath' section of the notebook begins with 43 pages of notes which appear to have been taken at a conference on industrial archaeology and possible means of preserving its heritage, including discussion of open-air museums. Notes are taken from talks by: Angus Buchanan - 'The Status of Industrial Archaeology; 'The Techniques of Industrial Archaeology, Part I and II' - Michael Rix and Frank Atkinson, respectively; and a paper given by Kenneth Hudson, giving particular reference to the approach adopted by museums in Scandinavia.
The 'Reading' section is marked 'Group 9, CBA' and features notes on lectures given at a further symposium on: the farm estate at Buscott Park (John Grayson) - at one time considered to be the most industrialised in the country; the Bucklebury Foundry ([Mc]Combe); and S. & E. Collier's gravel and brick-works [in Reading] (Ken Major).
The remainder of the notebook records visits to various industrial buildings and works in Kent (including a waterworks, two breweries and a wheelwrights) and numerous sites in Staffordshire, including several concerned with the china and earthenware manufacturing industry and surrounding canal network. Mills visited are listed at 'Place access points' below. Unindexed watermills were visited at: Park Mill, High Offley, Eccleshall; Wetley Rocks; and Cookshill, Caverswall, as was an unidentified mill called Logwood [Logwodd] Mill about which, Wailes notes, a film was made by the BBC .

Collection of undated research notes on:

• winding gear (15 pages);
• Robertson's windmill, Virginia (17 pages);
• Cranbrook mill (11 pages);
• a draft paper on the development of windmills, bearing similarity to sections of Wailes' 'Windmills in England' (published 1948) as well as a section on horse gear (24 pages);
• drawings/tracings of mill mechanisms, particularly bell alarms and sack hoists (3 pages);
• Suffolk windmills begining with 'W' listed at 'Place access points' below (3 cards);

Also a bundle of loose notes mostly focusing on Suffolk mills, some being undated, those that are ranging in date from 6 October 1928 to 29 April 1932.

Assorted brief 'aide memoire' and more detailed notes on a variety of milling matters including: notes taken from books/papers and maps (e.g. 'Dynamics of Windmills' - J.A. Griffiths, the 'English Encyclopedia', 1802, Merian's 'View of London', 1638 and 'The Miller, 1900 and 1916); lists of milling journals, articles, reports and academic papers (including electricity generation); more detailed notes and drawings on the mills listed at 'Place access points' below; a June 1926 typed packing and kit list for a trip to Suffolk and expenses incurred; mileage and logbooks for a trip in June 1928 and again for Wailes' Easter trip to Anglesey in 1929; notes taken from a visit to the Sussex Archives Collection including an account of the relocation of an entire Brighton windmill in 1797; a list of Lancashire mills in working order; and an anecdote about an interaction between a miller and the King of Prussia.

A government-supplied Shorthand Note Book labelled, 'Rex Wailes. No Mills. 1963. Leicester, Nottingham, Manchester' with notes on a variety of topics including:
Lecture series: Notes on talks given to: the Northampton Natural History Society (19 March 1963); the Nonsuch & Ewell Antiquarian Society (26 March 1963); in Canterbury (6-7 April 1963). These were seemingly given to generate support for forthcoming survey-work. The Canterbury notes also include observations on the Kent mills listed at 'Place access points' below. Draft letters to those attending/organising these events also feature, including one with respect to a proposed visit to 'Pilgrim's College'.
Nottinghamshire pumping stations: Notes on pumping stations at Bestwood, Papplewick, Boughton, near Ollerton, and Basford, with reference to the relevant manufacturers (e.g. Ashton Frost and Hathone Davy). Also contains a list of mills in the Southwell area of Nottingham, focusing on the River Greet and Dora Beck.
Canals: Notes taken at Manchester Public Library on surveys of the Greater Manchester/Lancashire canal network and the rivers serving them.

A Reporters' Notebook containing:
Northants: notes taken from 'Northants Notes & Queries, New Series, Vol.4, 1912-1920' relating to: a 1609 grant by James 1 of a post mill at Kettering; the history of an unindexed tower mill (located on the site of a former post mill on Rockingham Road, Kettering) which was demolished in 1893; 18th c. maps of Kettering showing the location of various mills and a 19th c. print showing a post mill at Peterborough; also notes about the post mill at Seaton, Rutland which was demolished in 1917 as well as the nearby watermill, Henry Royce being said to have worked at both mills as a boy.
Suffolk: research notes relating to Suffolk windmills including construction dates, operational status in 1926,1939 and 1955 and including the notable features listed in 'Subject access points' below.
Windmill restoration: eight pages of draft narrative rehearsing the demise of wind and watermills since the late 19th c. and extolling the efforts of John Russell to restore and preserve Union Mill, Cranbrook. The narrative rehearses the preservation efforts made by a number of local authorities (counties listed in 'Place access points' below) arguing that it should be essential for such work to be their responsibility.
Windmills still in operation: notes running from back-to-front in the notebook listing, 'How many still in use', which are 'Workable' and 'When used and why'.

Notebook measuring approx. 10.5 cm x 16.5 cm and marked on the inside cover 'c.1972' containing a list of mills (one page per mill), at varying levels of detail (those with more content being listed at 'Place access points' below). The first half of the notebook is devoted to watermills but the second half features windmills (mostly smock and post mills). Notes on several of the windmills reference the work of JM Heathcote. Cross references to maps/page numbers of books occur throughout.

Six loose pages from a 1953-1954 diary, the pages measuring approx. 7.5 cm x 11.5 cm. Contains two pages of notes recording an agreement between Kent County Council and the National Trust regarding the repair of an unidentified windmill. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Pilgrim Trust are also referenced.

A repurposed Lett's diary for 1935 measuring 7.5 cm x 11.5 cm, containing measurements, notes, calculations and drawings on a variety of engineering and milling matters including the windmills itemised at 'Place access points' below. Reference is made to the impact of gales at Winchelsea (which eventually blew down in gales in 1978 and 1987).

A repurposed pocket diary for June 1931 measuring 6.5 cm x 9 cm and marked "Cambs, Sh[aw], Kent, Sheffield" with brief notes on various topics including the mills listed at "Place access points" below. The notebook is only partially complete.
