Nicholl's foolscap notebook containing:
(1) 56 double-sided pages of dated notes, drawings, and measurements of the wind and watermills listed at "Place access points below".
(2) A newspaper clipping from the mid 1980s reporting on Millwrights International Limited's work on the restoration and removal of Chiseldon tower mill to Windmill Hill Business Centre, Swindon.
(3) A photocopied newspaper clipping from [the Telegraph] reporting on the restoration of Mapledurham Watermill, also referencing Nicholl's concern about the future of milling machinery at Rhydlydan Watermill, Wales.
(3) Further notes, contacts, addresses and potential suppliers of materials are listed on the last 6 pages of the notebook.

A government-supplied Shorthand Notebook dated May to August 1967, containing notes from visits to a variety of industrial buildings and works throughout the UK but particularly in Somerset, Westmorland and Wales. Sites visited include breweries, foundries, rope-walks, collieries, quarries and slate, brick and granite-works. The contents are itemized on the front cover. Mills visited are listed at 'Place access points' below. Unindexed mills at Bovey Tracey, Pontlliw (referencing Penallt millstones) and Felindre, Swansea were also visited, as was the millstone quarry at Penallt, Monmouthshire.

A repurposed Army field message book labelled, "Various notes should be transcribed. Gt Hazely, Ramsey, Ivinghoe" and comprising research notes, drawings and measurements from visits to the identifiable mills listed at "Place access points" below. Ivinghoe is more commonly known as 'Pitstone Windmill', Wailes noting a date of 1627 carved in part of the interior.

A repurposed Army field message book labelled, "Mainly Lincs 1928 & Brill & Lancs" but beginning with a five page, narrative account of the first two days of Wailes' trip to France with H.O. Clarke and his assistant, Herbert Bean[stor]. The account ends with disembarkation at Calais but includes a proposed itinerary through Nord pas de Calais for Easter Sunday 1928.
The next section comprises eight pages of lists of windmills, many but not all, being in Lincolnshire.
The remainder of the book comprises: brief research notes on Lincolnshire millwrights and windmills (17 pages); fuller research notes and drawings of various Lancashire windmills (27 pages); brief research notes for visits made to Brill Windmill and Castle Mill, Beccles in July 1928; 11 pages of full notes and drawings concerning repairs to Brill Windmill taken in August 1928. Lastly four loose sheets at the rear of the notebook listing negatives of numerous windmills required by Wailes. Those windmills identifiable from the notes are listed at "Place access points" below.
