Conveyance of a water corn mill, Westmorland

One sheet of velum measuring approx. 40 x 29 cm and bearing its original seal. On the reverse, "16 June 1612, Richard Langrigge & Wm Birkhead, Conveyance of Moietie of Water Corn Mill". The conveyance concerns land "in the said Countie of Westmorland & Commonlie called or known by the name of Mylnton, Mylne".

Abstract of title to three mills at Banbury

5 vellum sheets (30 cm x 20 cm) providing an abstract of Mr Darnelly's title to lands in Banbury traced back to: a lease by Queen Elizabeth I to Anthony Cope of two Banbury Mills dated 7 July 1587; a conveyance of a third mill "being a Windmill" from Thomas Hawtaine (son of Henry and Mary Hawtaine) to Richard Vivers dated 18 July 1632; a deed dated 6 October [1616] under which Henry Hawtaine made a "jointure of the premises" to his wife, Mary, being "the windmill the Ivy Close b[y] the Meadow....all part of Easington Farms" which he had purchased "from the king"; a conveyance of "the Fine yard Lands at Nethrop" from Richard Cope, John Churchill and Richard Hastings to Richard Vivers dated 27 April 1616; a conveyance of "the Barns" from Thomas and Edward Kirton to Robert Vivers dated 18 June 1652. The abstract is completed with Mr Darnelly obtaining judgement in Trinity Term 1662 for 900.

A release of land at Forabury and Minster, Cornwall.

Four sheets of watermarked paper (approximately 31 cm x 38 cm) with double-sided manuscript on three of the sheets. The release relates to two Corn or Grist watermills known as Tubbs Mills as well as the two meadows known as Mill Holme and a variety of other land, fields and premises, much of which named or described as to use/location, in the Parishes of Minster and Forabury. Parties to this indenture quadripartite are James Hill, Hugh Pyper. Richard Wise and Samuel Lyne.

Six sheets of watermarked paper (approximately 21 cm x 33 cm) with double-sided manuscript on five of the sheets. The indenture records the conveyance by Susanna Hill (daughter of James Hill) of two Corn or Grist watermills known as Tubbs Mills as well as the two meadows known as Mill Holme and a variety of other land, fields and premises, much of which named or described as to use/location, in the Parishes of Minster and Forabury. Parties to this indenture tripartite are Susanna Hill, Samuel Thomas and Oliver Adam.

Two 18th century documents relating to mills at Haughton and Thoresby Park, and to tree planting in the parkland of the Duke of Kingston (the Pierrepont Family)

1 folded sheet measuring 38cm x 31cm recording an agreement between the agent of the Duchess of Kingston and Thomas Thorpe (miller) relating to the diversion of the water supply to Haughton Mill and a weekly lease of new corn mill at Thoresby Park, the Duchess' corn and malt to be ground free of charge. For further content click on the link to the document transcription. A second folded sheet measuring 41cm x 31cm gives, "An Account of all the Trees taken out of the Nurserys and Planted in the Parke to 31 December 1762", seeming to relate to tree planting at either Thoresby Park or Holme Pierrepont Hall.

Piccott's End Mill, Hemel Hempstead

The twenty eighth image is a photocopy of an illustration of a watermill which is simply identified as being "A Watermill near Hemel Hempstead. Hartfordshire (Hertfordshire)." However, it is most likely that this is Piccott's End Mill. There is no date of production recorded.

Mill at Lewisham

The twenty ninth image features the watermill of Lewisham in Kent. This item is a photocopy of an illustration of the mill produced in the late eighteenth century. Interestingly, the item has a caption on the left hand corner of the bottom of the sketch reading "A View of the Water Mill near Lewisham in Kent" while on the right hand corner this information is reproduced in French "Viie du Moulin a leau, aupres du Lewisham en Kent". The sketch was printed by "Carington Bowles, Map and Printseller No. 69 in St Paul's Church Yard, London." and published on 1 October 1770.

Abbey Mill on Road of West Ham

The second item is a photocopy of an illustration featuring the windmill of the Abbey Mills of West Ham. The illustration is entitled as "Abbey mills on the road of West Ham". We are informed that this illustration was published on 13th February 1783 by John Harris at Sweetings Alley in Cornhill on the outskirts of London.
