Watermills of Anglesey and Caenarvon

This Sub - Series is comprised of seventy four photographs which are mainly of watermills situated in the Welsh historic counties of Anglesey , Caenarvon and Montgomeryshire. There are also photographs of watermills from the other Welsh counties. The majority of the photographs have been arranged by the alphabetical order of the name of the mill. However, in the case of the mills situated in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, the decision was made to place the photographs of these mills together under the letter "M" for "Montgomeryshire". This is an attempt to recognise and respect the fact that it was Gardner's wish for these photographs to remain together in sequence. Gardner grouped these photographs together and on the back of each photograph she provided the heading of "Mont", an abbreviation of "Montgomeryshire", for this purpose.

Bettws - y- Coed Mill Known as Pandy Mill

The sixth item is a photograph featuring Pandy mill, the watermill of the village of Bettws - y - Coed, a small village situated in the modern Conwy County Borough unitary authority which is a part of the historic county of Caernarvonshire. The handwritten note written on the back of the photograph which is somewhat difficult to read and decipher, provides an abbreviation of Bettws - y - Coed and reads "Felin BW Coed Caenarvon 1953." Felin is the Welsh word for mill. This information tells us that this photograph features the watermill known as Pandy mill.

Mill, Rhydybenllyg

The sixty sixth item is a photograph which is entitled "Melin (Mill) Rhyd y benlog". The identification of the precise location of this mill from this information has proved to be a somewhat difficult task. Nevertheless, it has become apparent through consulting the photographs of the Frank Gregory collection that this is Rhydbenllyg mill. When comparing the photographs of both collections, it is clear that this is the same mill. Therefore, one would imagine that "Rhyd y benlog" is the proper Welsh spelling with "Rhydbenllyg" being an anglicised version of the spelling. Rhydbenllyg is the name of a great valley and ford in Snowdonia ; at the heart of which this mill is situated. The image is dated to May 1954.

Mill, Rhydybenllyg

The sixty seventh item is a photograph of a mill which is entitled "Rhydebedog". Therefore, one would imagine that "Rhydebedog" is an alternative version of the place name "Rhyd y benlog"; the title used for the previous photograph which clearly features the same mill. Rhyd y benlog or Rhydbenllyg is the name of a great valley and ford in Snowdonia ; at the heart of which this mill is situated. The photograph is undated.
