Lease of a mill in St Mary of the Castle, Hastings

1 folded sheet measuring 50cm x 38cm, signed and sealed by Mary Dodson, and detailing the grant of a year's lease "of a Mill & in the Parish of St Mary of the Castle in Hasting for one year from Michas 1775. Rent £15". The lease is granted by Mary Dodson, widow, of Rye to Joseph Carswell, baker, of Hastings. The mill is leased together with, "the mill stones, wheels, coggs, staves, sweeps, running tackle and all other implements, utensils and appurtenances to the said mill, stable and ground..."

The seventieth item is an entry from a magazine presenting a reproduction of a water - colour entitled"Arundel Mill" painted by the famous English landscape painter, Peter De Wint (21 January 1784 - 30 January 1849.) The watermill of this painting is Swanbourne Lake Mill situated on the river Arun.

Counterpart Lease for Steyning Watermill between the Rev. John Goring of Weston Park, Sussex ("clerk"), to William Penfold and Thomas Brown (both noted as being from Steyning and "Millers"). Signed at the foot by Penfold and Brown, and with red wax seals adjacent. The text notes that included was the Water Mill, Engine House, Coal House, "...machinery, steam engine, tackle & running gear there..." The term of the lease is noted as being from March 25th 1871 for 14 years. Approx. 740x635mm.

Abstract of the title of the trustees of the estate of Charles White in liquidation to "a wind corn mill called Riseden Mill" and surrounding premises in the Parish of Wadhurst, Sussex.
