Mill of Welshpool

Farm Mill near Dyffryn

The eleventh photograph features a watermill referred to by Gardner in this instance as "Farm Mill Near Harlech." However, this is clearly the same watermill as featured in the twelfth photograph of this Sub - Series which is described by Gardner as "Farm Mill Near Dyffryn, Merioneth". Of course, there are a number of places in Wales called Dyffryn. The Dyffryn in question appears to be Dyffryn Ardudwy of the ancient county of Gwynedd which is not only situated near Harlech but also relatively close to the Gwynedd and Merionethshire border.

Gardner, Emilie Montgomery (1882-1959)

Farm Mill near Dyffryn

The twelfth image clearly features the same mill as in the previous photograph. The fact that Gardner labelled the previous photograph as featuring a mill from "Near Harlech" whilst referring to this image as "Farm Mill near Dyffryn, Merioneth" indicates that this mill is the one that was located near to Dyffryn Ardudwy in Gwynedd.

Gardner, Emilie Montgomery (1882-1959)

Little Wheel of Cleveley Mill and E. M. Gardner

This photograph is labelled by Gardner as the "Little Wheel of Cleveley Mill, Enstone, Oxfordshire". Unfortunately, Gardner does not tell us whether this is the Upper or Lower Mill of Cleveley as there were indeed two water mills with the name of Cleveley in the Oxfordshire village of Enstone. It is most likely that the woman featured in this photograph is E. M . Gardner. This image was originally in the folder "EMGC-01-18" and has now been moved to the folder "EMGC-04" and has been catalogued as "EMGC-04-11".

Unknown photographer

Barthomley Mill, Cheshire

This image of Barthomley Mill in Cheshire is the only photograph E . M. Gardner took of a watermill in the county of Cheshire. This image was originally in the folder "EMGC-01-16" and has now been moved to the folder "EMGC-04" and has been catalogued as "EMGC-04-14-01". Originally, this photograph accompanied the postcards of watermills Gardner had collected. Incidentally, these postcards have also been moved from "EMGC-01-18" and are now in the postcard folder. Gardner has written detailed notes on the back of this photograph providing the researcher with information of great value. She has written "Wheel gone - mill pond planned. Wheel used to be parallel with wall shown in picture - a paddle wheel. Working about 40 years ago. July 1939."
