'Notes Watermills'

Notebook measuring approx. 10.5 cm x 16.5 cm and marked on the inside cover 'c.1972' containing a list of mills (one page per mill), at varying levels of detail (those with more content being listed at 'Place access points' below). The first half of the notebook is devoted to watermills but the second half features windmills (mostly smock and post mills). Notes on several of the windmills reference the work of JM Heathcote. Cross references to maps/page numbers of books occur throughout.

A repurposed diary for 1949 measuring approx. 9 cm x 15 cm containing Wailes' comments/criticisms of an unidentified book on English windmills comprising at least 11 chapters. Wailes notes that the book's bibliography makes no reference to the Transactions of the Newcomen Society. A sample comment reads, 'D23-24 Not enough about caps. Doesn't discuss their construction or give diagrams'.

Pocket notebook - Preliminary notes for 'The English Windmill' - 1925

A pocket notebook measuring approx. 7 cm x 14 cm containing draft content and chapter headings for Wailes' 'The English Windmill' (1954), a later manuscript note on the inside cover reading, '[Preliminary] notes for The English Windmill 1952-1954'. The notebook also contains a list of themes/mills for a film project and notes for a lecture given in February 1925.

Pocket notebook - 1945

A repurposed diary for 1945, cover removed and measuring approx. 7 cm x 13.5 cm, containing brief notes on a variety of milling matters (as well as other topics, particularly music). The notes include: a memo regarding a call to Matheson of the National Trust regarding Bourne Ponds Mill, Colchester; a 3-page list of mills, possibly depicting the development of windmills through time (from 'The Windmill Psalter' to 'Napolean's Raft'); a list of Lincolnshire mills. There are more detailed notes about the mills listed at 'Place access points' below, including Partington's Mill, Auckland, New Zealand (unindexed).

Pages from a 1953-1954 pocket diary

Six loose pages from a 1953-1954 diary, the pages measuring approx. 7.5 cm x 11.5 cm. Contains two pages of notes recording an agreement between Kent County Council and the National Trust regarding the repair of an unidentified windmill. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Pilgrim Trust are also referenced.

Reference is made to the impact of gales at Winchelsea (which eventually blew down in gales in 1978 and 1987).

A repurposed pocket diary for November 1931 measuring 6.5 cm x 9 cm and marked "Hunts, Cambs, Suffolk" with brief notes on, and/or references to, the mills listed at "Place access points" below. The notes also mention an unidentified, 17th century smock mill at 'Ickleton, Suffolk' which had a thatched roof and had been pulled down at the end of the 19th century.

Research notebook on Weeton Mill

A repurposed Army field message book labelled, "Weeton Mill, Lancs". The notebook contains 57 pages of detailed notes from a visit to Weeton Mill in November 1931, recording measurements, drawings and observations as to the mill's condition, from its basement to its cap, inside and out, as well as details of the kiln house and store room. Wailes records talking to Mr Ralph Hall of Mill Farm, Weeton, who expressed his concern that the site is regularly vandalised by local youths. The remainder of the book is blank.
