Waterwheel Higher Mill, Helmshore

The thirty second item is the third photograph featuring the watermill known as the "Higher Mill of Helmshore". The photograph was produced in 1961. We are informed that the water wheel was constructed between 1820 and 1830 and that it had a "20 feet diameter" and was "10 feet wide" with oak buckets which were "formerly iron." The last time the mill was in operation was in December 1954. From the perspective of the year 1961, the water wheel was still in "good condition and able to revolve."

The thirty third item features the fulling stocks of the watermill known as the "Higher Mill" in the village of Helmshore. The photograph was produced in 1961. We are informed that the fulling stock on the left hand side of the picture dated back to 1829.

The thirty fourth photograph is of Donnington Brewery situated in the Gloucestershire village of Donnington. The image features the outer wheel at Donnington Brewery. The photograph is undated. A note has been written on the back which is certainly not in Gardner's own hand. The note records that "This wheel is not in use but an inner wheel is working to drive brewing machinery."

The nineteenth item is the second image of Town Mill at Ottery St Mary in Devon. Like the preceding image of Town Mill, the print features the same Tumbling Weir from a different angle and vantage point. However, in contrast to the preceding photograph of Town Mill, this image is undated.

The forty second image is a photocopy of an engraving of Monk's Mill on the River Avon in the city of Bath in the county of Somerset. There is no recorded date of production for either the original illustration or the photocopy. However, we are informed that the picture was drawn by W. Westall A. R. A. and engraved by E. Finden.

We are informed by the information on the back of the print that the photographer was "Hallam Ashley, F . R. P. S of New Costessey, Norwich". The family of Hallam Asheley who owned the copyright of this photograph have given their expressed permission for the Mills Archive to reproduce this image.

The seventy fourth item is a photograph of the watermill at Guy's Cliffe in Warwickshire. The photograph is undated. Guy's Cliffe is a hamlet situated on the River Avon and on the Coventry road between the town of Warwick and the village of Leek Wootton.

Shotesham Watermill

The third item of this Sub - Series is a photograph of Shotesham Watermill in Norfolk. The image is undated. However, we are informed that the photographer was Hallam Ashley. A description is printed on the back of the photograph which informs us that "The Watermill at Shotesham, in Norfolk, for over two hundred years formed part of a beautiful and famous scene. It has been needlessly destroyed despite the efforts of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings."
