One sheet of paper measuring 40 cm x 32 cm and folded in two. This is a codicil to the will of John Squire, "late of Fishley in the County of Norfolk but now of Acle in the same County, Farmer and Miller", amending his will of 3 October 1974 to replace the appointment of his brother, Albert Squire, as executor, trustee and guardian with the the appointment of his son, "John Squire the younger".
The bundle contains papers, receipts and accounts concerning the ownership of Guilton Mill, Ash in the late 19th century and includes: a counterpart lease dated 14 December 1898 between Thomas Marshall (miller and lessor) and Frederick John Collard (dairyman and lessee) of "all that Windmill for grinding corn and other grains commonly known as Guilton Town Mill"; the last will and testament (and associated probate papers) of Thomas Thorn dated 2 October 1884 (codicil dated 31 January 1887) which grants rights in respect of his freehold estate (Guilton Town Mill) to his wife and then to his daughter Harriet and her husband, Thomas Marshall; the last will and testament of Thomas Marshall dated 7 August 1896 (codicil dated 5 January 1897); a Trustees Account of Receipts and Payments under the Bankruptcy Act 1890, concerning an arrangement between Frederick John Collard and his creditors.
2 sheets of vellum measuring approx. 63 x 54 cm (with seal), comprising probate documents reproducing the will of Thomas Ellerby, miller and baker of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham. The will and codicils included the bequest of "the steam mill and appurtenances thereto......used in the concern of Miller & Baker" as well as a foundry and numerous dwellings in the area around Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland. The will was dated 10th February 1815, with two codicils dated 16th and 18th October 1817.
The first cutting describes the fire at Cleator Moor Flour Mill, near Whitehaven, and the second details an anecdote after a meeting of the National Association of British and Irish Millers.
A 4-page report summarising the principle operations of Phase II of the restoration project. The report notes the donation of considerable resources including free shipment of equipment from the UK by Geest Line. Disappointment at having to reject some of the timber from Guyana (and consequent delays to the project) is noted. Likewise, disappointment at having to import a UK blacksmith to the project team is expressed, there being "no able blacksmith of an acceptable working age" remaining on the island despite a previously "strong tradition of superb workmanship". Allowing students from the local college's carpentry and joinery classes to join in aspects of the repairs had been a success, "and potentially of use in the ongoing repair of historical structures on the island".
The Chiltern Partnership's 44-page report on the Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill based on Nicholl's January 1994 survey. The report describes the background to the project, the mill's location, layout and its structural condition and that of the machinery. A recommended programme of repair is provided which takes into account limitations in resources and the unique nature of the mill's machinery. Aspects of funding are also considered, including the need to secure an income stream from visitors/additional facilities but retaining the "unique atmosphere of the complex". A conditional budget/estimated costs for the total project is given, the total assessed cost being BBD 196,074.00. The report concludes with a proposed maintenance schedule and suggestions for the future development of the site.
