James Venn's revisions to windmill chapters

James Venn attempted to revise and add to the windmill section of Freese’s book. His work towards this end comprises the following:

A handwritten notebook contains text drawn largely from Freese’s second draft, with new introductory chapters.

Five ring binders contain photocopies of Freese second draft interspersed with Venn’s handwritten notes, as well as photographs, sketches, maps etc (mostly photocopies).

Another ring binder has a different preface/introduction to the handwritten notebook - stating that it is now “over half a century” instead of “forty years” since Freese wrote his work, and that James Venn has now abandoned the idea of reproducing Freese’s work with minor corrections and additions and instead states his intent to completely rewrite the book. The remainder of this ring binder contains miscellaneous notes, sketches, cuttings and correspondence.

Three other ring binders of miscellaneous notes have been repackaged in archival folders. One includes list of Bucks negatives.

Venn, James (1921-2014)

Typescript second draft

The second typescript draft in two ring binders. It incorporates the corrections made to the handwritten manuscript. The manuscript held by the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society on which the 2007 volume was based appears, from the page reproduced there, to be a copy of the first typescript draft (VENN-BWW-03), to which handwritten corrections were made, which were then incorporated into this typescript. The text of the watermill chapters of this typescript is therefore mostly the same as the 2007 printed volume.

Freese, Stanley (1902-1972), town planner and artist

Typescript first draft

The first typescript draft. The four manila files it is stored in belonged to H E S Simmons and were used by him when sending the draft back to Freese (see letter of 1973).

Handwritten drafts

Freese's initial drafts for his book, based on the information in the notebooks (VENN-BWW-01). They were the basis of the first typescript draft (VENN-BWW-03); corrections and additions were then made to the handwritten drafts, which became the basis of the second typescript (VENN-BWW-04).
