Account Books

Account books used by Smith to record details of sales and expenses for the 'Windmills in...' series of publications. Smith also inserted some designs for front covers for books in the series.

Colour Photos, Prints and Postcards

Contains photographs taken by Smith and others, plus prints and postcards, mainly colour images.

Part of the series contains photographs taken of windmills in a specific county or of a specific restoration projects. Others were labelled Miscellaneous and contain images from various locations.

The series also contains images taken or collated by Robert Paterson, plus separate files of postcards and images from paintings.

The original identifier has largely been maintained to describe each file. However, in some cases it has been necessary to provide additional information to differentiate between files.

Black and White Photographs

Contains Smith's collection of black and white photographs of windmills. The images are arranged by county or area, maintaining Smith's original order.

Research by County

Collections of newspaper cuttings, postcards, research notes, printed articles and other papers, both originals and reproductions. Smith created a research folder for various English counties. Not all counties are covered by the collection. Research was mainly focused in the south and east of England, though counties as far afield as Lancashire, Lincolnshire and Shropshire are also included.

Contains diaries, routes and notebooks compiled by Smith during his research for the county Windmills series.

Also included is one file entitled 'The Smith Surveys' which includes maps drawn by Smith and notes made for various windmills.
