Stephen Buckland's early research

The material in this series date from the 1950s up to 1956 and includes notes, records, and transcriptions from magazines and journals on flour milling, windpower and waterpower. A record of interest is a folder from the SPAB Mills Section Watermill Conference on 18 April 1953. The folder contains watermill surveys dating 1953 and 1954 of watermills in Warwickshire, Kent and Sussex. The material is considered to be some of Stephen Buckland's earlier research material.

Photograph albums

Photograph albums collated by Stephen Buckland. Nine traditional photograph albums with photographs taken by Stephen, and occasionally his brother Francis, of mills, and other subject matters. 24 self-made albums in plastic folders, with photographs and postcards affixed to paper with corner fixings, containing photographs taken by Stephen Buckland, as well as copy photographs by other people, along with postcards of mills collected by Stephen and purchased at SPAB from the Rex Wailes Collection.

Mill Research Notebooks

Research notebooks compiled by Stephen Buckland over 56 years - covering various areas of interest including, wind and water mills; biographical material on millers, millwrights, engineers, and others (Wills, life events, censuses etc); antiquity; industrial engineering.
Stephen Buckland's handwriting was notoriously bad and thus reading the contents of the notebooks proved difficult. Some of the "non-mill notebooks" likely contain mill research notes but may have been missed. It should be noted that Stephen transcribed some of his notebooks using his typewriter, and some of these can be found within numerous files of research material, identified at the bottom of the transcriptions by the notebook number, i.e. 1992/4.

Printed and published works
