Specifications and contract for Bedcote Mill, Stourbridge

Conditional Surrender relating to the Manor of Tacolneston, Norwich

Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 50cm x 39cm) documenting the surrender of rights and land in the Manor of Tacolneston by Barnabas Burroughes (miller) of Aslacton in favour of Walter Mace (Boot and Shoe Manufacturer, Norwich) on the condition that these rights might be resumed on the re-payment on 16 April 1871 of the £250 consideration paid by Walter Mace (plus interest).

Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 40cm x 32cm) documenting an inventory taken at Shillington Mill on 10 October 1862 by Isaac [Chalkley], millwright (Hitchin) with detailed description of machinery, stones and of a water wheel, "in very bad state of repair".
Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 48cm x 37cm) documenting the assignment of the lease of "the Water Corn Mill called Wattle Mills" by William Hipgrave (miller) to John Kempson (famer) and James Kempson (miller) dated 4 November 1865. Signed and sealed by all parties.
Double-sided handwritten sheet (approx. 40cm x 31cm) granting licence to the above assignment.

Extract of the will of John Scarbrough, farmer and miller, Lincolnshire

2 sheets of paper measuring 25cm x 40cm and extracted from registry of the Archdeaconry of Stow showing the last will and testament of John Scarbrough of Ashby, Bottesford, Lincolnshire. Bequests include land in Ashby called "Mill Hill" and giving "to my son John Scarbrough all that my corn wind mill with mill stones, sails, tackle, apparel, going geer......situated on Mill Hill".

Two 18th century documents relating to mills at Haughton and Thoresby Park, and to tree planting in the parkland of the Duke of Kingston (the Pierrepont Family)

1 folded sheet measuring 38cm x 31cm recording an agreement between the agent of the Duchess of Kingston and Thomas Thorpe (miller) relating to the diversion of the water supply to Haughton Mill and a weekly lease of new corn mill at Thoresby Park, the Duchess' corn and malt to be ground free of charge. For further content click on the link to the document transcription. A second folded sheet measuring 41cm x 31cm gives, "An Account of all the Trees taken out of the Nurserys and Planted in the Parke to 31 December 1762", seeming to relate to tree planting at either Thoresby Park or Holme Pierrepont Hall.

A year's lease for a watermill at Mill Bridge, Liversedge

1 sheet of vellum measuring 62cm x 39cm comprising a lease from Thomas Greenwood and Benjamin Wood of a corn mill at Mill Bridge, Liversedge to Elizabeth Kershaw. The description of the demised property includes, "All that Mill or building situate and being at Mill Bridge aforesaid used as a Corn mill with the water wheel, steam engine, engine house, drying kiln, machines, hoppers, Mill stones and all other implements, fixtures, geerings and things belonging to the said mill...". The indenture is signed and sealed by Wood and Greenwood.

Indenture relating to a grist mill at Northpetherton

1 sheet of vellum measuring 77cm x 38cm, signed and sealed by Henry Gatchell and Robert Woodhouse and concerning a grist mill and meadows at Northpetherton (being known as Spall House, woods or grounds). The reverse features numerous notes in different handwriting, relating to the receipt of payments due under "this mortgage", the last one being made in 1712.

Indenture relating to a watermill at Darley, Dacre and Bewerley

1 sheet of vellum measuring 81cm x 63cm, sealed with "the mark of Henry Clint" of Darley, in which he grants a "feoffment of a watercorn-mill, land and premises in Darley and Dacre with Bewerley" to William, Nathan and Amos Bake of Dacre in consideration for the payment of £1425. The mill is known as "Darley Mill" and the feoffment references Darley Beck.

Bundle of papers relating to The Black Windmill, Woodnesborough

The bundle relates to the Black Mill, Woodnesborough which burned down in 1885 and features miscellaneous accounts, cheques, receipts, and bills, many of which concern mill owner, Henry Famariss, and his insurance claim following the fire. Notable documents include: an undated inventory of the contents of Black Mill; a lease (and counterpart lease) dated 30 August 1862 between Eliza Oliver and Stephen West for the hire of various premises, including Black Mill at Woodnesborough and a post mill at St. Mary the Virgin, Sandwich, Kent; a lease of the same properties between Henry Famariss and Francis Billing (miller) dated 15 July 1883 (together with a further draft lease dated 1884) ; a schedule of deeds to property owned by Henry Famariss dated 17 April 1878; a statement by Thomas Richard Holman of Holman & Collard, Canterbury, millwright, regarding his knowledge of the Black Mill as, "one of the best of its kind in the count[r]y" and estimating the cost of restoring it; W.C. Simmons' builder's specification and report on the Black Mill, Woodnesborough, dated 6 March 1885 providing estimates of value and describing the dimensions of the mill prior to its destruction by fire ("a very excellent and powerful one of its kind one of the best in the neighbourhood"); Henry Famariss' claim for £900 under his insurance policy with the Midland Counties Insurance Company.

Agreement of sale for the Hays Hygeian Flour Mills and associated properties, Kingston upon Hull

10 page paper document. Agreement between Walter Fred Harris (representing the Trustees of the Debenture holders of Hays Hygeian Flour Mills) and Benjamin Thompson (agent of J. G. and B. Thompson Limited, Corn Millers) for the sale of Hay's Hygeian Flour Mills in Kingston upon Hull (being "the land, steam Flour Mills, offices and buildings" on the west side of Grosvenor Street, further properties on the east side of Walmsley Street, the land forming the riverside wharf on the east side of Wincolmlee and associated fixtures, equipment and machinery). Contains also a printed copy of the General Conditions of Sale of the Hull Incorporated Law Society. Original document available for reference.
