Formed when Joseph Rank Ltd acquired Hovis McDougall in 1962.

Joseph Rank began working at a small windmill in Hull in 1875. In 1885 he built his first roller mill, Alexandra Mill, and in 1891 the much larger Clarence Mill. In 1899 the company was incorporated as Joseph Rank Ltd. Many other milling companies were purchased, and new mills constructed in ports around the country.
On Joseph Rank's death in 1945 his son James became chairman, followed by his brother J Arthur Rank in 1952. In 1962 the company acquired Hovis-McDougall, becoming Ranks Hovis McDougall Limited.

The limited company was formed in 2014 as a joint venture between Premier Foods, owners of the Hovis brand and the Gores Group.

The firm was founded with the construction of Victoria Mills, Wellingborough, by John Batham Whitworth. Frank George took over the firm in 1933 and 1936 became a director of Weetabix Ltd; the firm continued to own shares in Weetabix until 2003. In 1997 under Martin George the firm became the Whitworth Holdings Group and Whitworth Ltd, purveyors of dried fruits, was sold. The firm constructed new mills in Wellingborough and Peterborough from 2000 to 2009. In 2012 they purchased mills in Worksop, Langley and Holbeach from Smith's Flour Mills. In June 2016 they took over the assets of Whitley Bridge (excluding the flour mill) from Jas Bowman. In September 2016 they became the owners of Carr's Milling. In 2018 they purchased mills in Manchester and Selby from Hovis Ltd. In 2020 they began construction of a new mill at Whitley Bridge.
