Biographical history

Hallam Ashley (1900-1987) was a photographer. Much of his work involved photographing buildings for the National Monuments Record. He was also keenly interested in Mills, something which resulted from his friendship with mill expert Rex Wailes, and worked closely with the Mills Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Scope and content

Sited on the River Bure near Coltishall. Originally there was a mill on the site since before the Domesday Book in 1086. This mill was built in 1789 to replace an earlier 16th century mill. The mill burned down in 1963 and was never restored. The mill pond is now a popular site for angling and wild swimming.
Show gearing from pit wheel to stones exposed after the fire of 1963. View from the east.
