The mill after it was tail winded (i.e. the wind blew from behind the sails) and the cap and four sails were blown off in a violent storm. Shows a man, presumably the miller, standing on the wreckage of the sails in front of the mill and the brake wheel protruding from the debris of the cap on top of the tower.

This painting was painted by T Shore, who was the last miller before its closure in 1919. He was a noted local painter.

Alan Gifford comments: "This shows the mill in its worst known condition. The cap ribs are all visible and only a few shutter bars remain. This was the state when Derbyshire CC bought it in about 1967. They had placed a preservation on the mill in 1966"

Alan Gifford comments: "This marks the start of restoration. The cap has been fitted with horizontal tiles. These cannot have been successful and were soon removed and replaced with aluminium sheeting. Work has not started on the sails or fantail."

Alan Gifford comments: "After what was the planned DCC restoration in 1972. The sails and fantail are in place but the old kiln in the foreground is in a poor state. The mill was not in working order and the cap did not turn. There was minimal machinery in place."

Alan Gifford comments: "This is the earliest mention of a Tower mill at Heage contained in an advert in the Derby Mercury 16th June 1791 . Note that it refers to 'Materials laid down on site' - stone for tower was in adjacent quarry."

Alan Gifford comments: "The tiled covering shown in GIFF-HWS-01-08 must have been unsatisfactory since it was replaced by Aluminium sheeting. No records have been found giving any reasons for this change but tiled form probably leaked when it rained."

Alan Gifford comments: "The great spur wheel is all wooden and very old. It was originally fitted with a double row of wooden cogs to drive the stone nuts. These had been removed long ago and replaced with bolt on iron teeth segments. It was decided to retain the gear and to replace the segments but in order to be able to mill flour using it reinforcing plates of custom made SG iron were inserted between the arms."

Alan Gifford comments: "The fantail at Heage operates a pair of twin pinions on the rack inside the top of the tower. A hand cranking mechanism is incorporated, to be used if the wind direction has changed significantly since last in use. This entire system was completely overhauled by the contractors."
