"The Cap", Smock Mill, Upminster, Essex
Part of Rex Wailes Collection
The old fantail frame had the date 1799 painted on a cross member. The reasons for this are a mystery, as the date does not correspond to any known history of the Mill. The mill was built in 1803.

Text on back reads"Cap, patent sails and striking gear"
In 1899 the original wind shaft snapped. In 1901 it was replaced, and this is perhaps a unique picture in the annals of millwrighting in that it shows the replacement 3/4 ton cast iron shaft being raised 50 feet up by means of a single mast and rope tackle hauled by hand. The picture is in very poor condition and has required extensive work to reveal any detail
