1837 mortgage indenture, with transcript

This indenture concerns a mortgage taken out by James Nokes (the builder of Upminster Windmill) in 1837. The pdf file contains a facsimile of the original document, and a transcript of the old English text, plus notes. A reproduction of the document typeset in a readable font is also included.

Thomas William Abraham 1829-1897, father of Alfred Abraham

Thomas William Abraham was the eldest son of Thomas Abraham (the first of the Abrahams to own the Mill). The latter's will gave the option to purchase the Mill to Thomas Williams' younger brother, John Arkell Abraham. For some time, it had been assumed that this was because the older brother was not involved with the Mill, though there is some evidence that he was.

The Mill House as seen in the 1890s

The original is a very faded black and white image and may date from before 1890. The two men have not been identified positively. The one on the left is probably Alfred Abraham and the other may be one of his brothers, either Clement or Sidney.

Early view of the mill site

This very poor condition postcard is the only known, early, view of the mill site showing its NW aspect. A great deal of work has been done to restore the image, the results of which can be seen in file FUWA-02813

Enhanced 1909 image of the mill from NW

A restored and enhanced version of file FUWA-02812. This image being the only known, early, view of the mill site from the NW, it has been important to extract as much information as it can show. To avoid loosing details by using contrast adjustments to improve image rendering, colour tints have been applied instead to give tone separation.
